First Trans-Atlantic Voice Transmission

Remembering Fessenden

Over the Easter weekend Air Cadets from Scotland will activate the Fessenden radio site at Machrihanish with establishment of a Tactical radio station

 

This station will be contacting the station at Brant Rock Mass., Fessenden's mirror station.

 

Staff at the USA end will be include members of the Civil Air Patrol with possibly input from the USAF. Contacts will also be made with Cadets in Canada.

 

Mainly military frequencies will be used but operation on the Amateur bands will also take place.

 

The callsign GB1FVT is now a permanent allocation to the Dalriada Radio Club in Campbeltown and will be used on the Amateur bands together with the usual "RAF" GB calls.

 

Stateside W1FRV will be the call used courtesy AA1A Dave Riley.Several Canadian "establishments" will also be activated.

 

Periods of operation akin to the above will take place over the next few months.

Dalriada Radio Club is greatly indebited to Ofcom in assigning this call at short notice as a permanent allocation.

 

GB1FVT commemorates these immense events in communications history and recognises the genius of the often forgotten name of Reginald Fessingdon.
